Screen fatigue, and what recovery actually requires

Screen fatigue — eye strain, mental fog, headaches, and irritability after extended screen time — is caused by sustained visual load, blue light exposure, and the continuous partial attention screens demand. Recovery requires genuine visual rest: time in darkness or away from all screens, not switching from a laptop to a phone. Effective protocols include the 20-20-20 rule during work, complete blackout breaks of 10–20 minutes, and screen-free wind-down before sleep.

Why switching screens isn't rest

The eyes and visual cortex don't distinguish between "work screen" and "break screen." Eight hours of laptop followed by an evening of phone is twelve hours of continuous visual load. The fog at 9pm isn't mysterious.

The recovery hierarchy

Micro: 20-20-20 (every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds). Mid: a 10–20 minute complete blackout break — total darkness lets the visual system fully stand down in a way that dim light doesn't. Macro: a screen-free final hour before sleep.

Total darkness, on demand

The mid-tier reset is where most people fail — finding true darkness midday is hard. This is the specific problem the VOID Bluetooth Focus Mask solves: 3D blackout cups for zero light leak, built-in audio for the wind-down, worn at a desk or anywhere else. At night it doubles as a blackout sleep mask, covering the macro tier too.
